“Science without religion is lame: religion without science is blind.” – Albert Einstein, 1941
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; (Gen 1:1-2)
Theological Respond: Before establishing the case of scientific expectancy into the creation of the world in six days as written by Rabbi Moses in his book Genesis, we must first try to understand the theology of the beginning (principium). Church Father Victorinus on the “creation of the world” writes that God Almighty gave birth to the entire mass for the decoration of His great art in six days and on the seventh which he consecrated the creation with a blessing. For this reason the septenary (a set or group of units in seven) for both heavenly and earthy things are ordered.
Scientific Respond: This was exactly what happened during the Big Bang; an enormous light brightened the entire universe from a singularity. The light didn’t require a medium but was produced from an infinitely hot and dense spot and within less than a fraction of a second, the entire universe was formed. This was the mother of everything that exist energy, matter, time including every atom that was created. Our solar system including the sun formed about 4.5 – 5 billion years ago. This explanation of the mysterious hot dense spot known as the singularity is hardly answered by science. In the first place how did the universe began in the emptiness? Science fails miserably to answer the question and often explains of an unimaginable power. What is the power? We do not know. The only conclusion for the birth of the universe is God’s power that worked in the creation.
2) 3And God said: ‘Let there be light.’ And there was light. (Gen 1:3)
And God saw the light, which it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. (Gen 1:4-5)
Theological Respond: In the principium (beginning) God Almighty made light, and divided equally into twelve hours by day and by night for this reason day might overcome and labour will be refreshed with the alternate change of rest. The division and introduction of 12 hours can be read when our Messiah says “are there not 12 hours in the day?” (Jn 11:9),
Scientific Respond: The source of light is not mentioned only the division of light is told. There is a better way to explain during the Big Bang, electrons caused tiny particles of light making the whole universe to glow. This is how light was created without a source. Later the light was divided from darkness.
And God said: ‘Let there be a firmament
in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the
waters from the waters.’ And God made the
firmament, and divided the waters which were
under the firmament from the waters which
were above the firmament; and it was so. And
God called the firmament Heaven. And there
was evening and there was morning, a second
day. (Gen 1:6-8)
Respond: Asteroids rich with water and protoplanets (a large body of matter in orbit around the sun or star considered in the developing into a planet) collided with prehistoric earth resulting in water formation. Later, gaseous was released from volcanoes which increased the water level. The activity took more than 4 billion years and the next billion years for the earth to cool, water vapor escaped and freeze the earth’s atmosphere. This resulted in the formation of cloud and tons of water fell on the earth. Water was separated; one remained on earth and one in the atmosphere.
And God said: ‘Let the waters under the
heaven be gathered together unto one place, and
let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. And
God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering
together of the waters called He Seas; and God
saw that it was good. (Gen 1:9)
Respond: It took more than 3 billion years for the oceans and the land mass to be separated. Till today we are experiencing a separation between the water and land.
[11 ] And God said: ‘Let the
earth put forth grass, herb yielding seed, and
fruit-tree bearing fruit after its kind, wherein
is the seed thereof, upon the earth.’ And it was
And the earth brought forth grass, herb
yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit,
wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind; and
God saw that it was good. And there was
evening and there was morning, a third day. (Gen 1:11-13)
Respond; Many skeptics, atheist and Ishmaelite will question the third day, how can the vegetation grow without the light after all light is essential for photosynthesis. Well, the answer is simple God Almighty already created light in the beginning (Gen 1:3). Only the source of light had to be created. Science is yet to explain that what had happened to the light that was caused from a singularity. So, the fruit bearing plants can survive without the source of light. When we dive into the extreme end of the sea bed where the sunlight even fails to penetrate, in a situation like such, plants at the waterbed thrive without any difficulty. Yes possibilities are high and investigation is small.
And God said: ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day
from the night; and let them be for signs, and for
seasons, and for days and years; and let them
be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to
give light upon the earth.’ And it was so. And
God made the two great lights: the greater light
to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the
night; and the stars. And God set them in the
firmament of the heaven to give light upon the
earth, and to rule over the day and over the
night, and to divide the light from the darkness;
and God saw that it was good. And there was
evening and there was morning, a fourth day.
Respond: Hebrew word used for emit/give light in this verse (owr) can mean both “to be or become light” and to be illuminated or become lighted up’. This is an expression by saying “greater light and smaller light”. The scientific explanation was already been established in (Ezk 32:7-8)
And when I shall extinguish thee, I will
cover the heaven, / And make the stars thereof
black; / I will cover the sun with a cloud, / And
the moon shall not give her light. / (Ezk 32:7-8)
10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations
thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be
darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not
cause her light to shine. (ISAIAH 13: 10)
And it shall come to pass in that day, / Saith the Lord God, /That I will cause the sun to go down at noon, / And I will darken the earth in the clear day. (AMOS 8:9)
29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days
shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give
her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the
powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (Matt 24: 29)
Further when we analysis, the glory of the heavenly bodies differ accordingly. The verse in (1 Cor 15:41) explains the functions of such created heavenly bodies. Today, when we examine, the light of moon is essential for a pitch dark night. This is why the verse explains that all those heavenly bodies differ from one another in respect to their utility.
41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory
of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one
star differeth from another star in glory. (1 Cor 15:41)
And God said: ‘Let the waters swarm
with swarms of living creatures, and let fowl fly
above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.’
And God created the great sea-monsters, and
every living creature that creepeth, wherewith the
waters swarmed, after its kind, and every winged
fowl after its kind; and God saw that it was good.
And God blessed them, saying: ‘Be fruitful,
and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and
let fowl multiply in the earth.’ And there was
evening and there was morning, a fifth day. (Gen 1:20-23)
Respond: This was the genesis of life that began in the sea. The earliest fossils of life, unicellular bacteria were first discovered in the rocks embedded in the oceans about 3.5 billion years ago. Within, 1.5 billion years the first complex multicellular life took its course whereas the evolution of the oldest full animal life in the oceans dates back to 630 million years.
This is how science agrees with Bible and the calculation of six days. It also mentions about the ‘‘evening and morning” which is the perspective for the human sense. Bible explains its true calculation in the below mentioned verses.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight are but as
yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. (Ps 90:4)
8. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day. (2 Peter 3:8)
9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours (12) in the
day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not,
because he seeth the light of this world. (Jn 11:9)
Respond: The verse (Jn 11:9) is applied to divide “evening from morning”. In fact, the verse is itself an advanced science and the makers of the clock could be influenced from this Biblical passage. Therefore, when we look around and read about some of the great scientist such as Sir. Isaac Newton, Galileo to name some, they spent their lives investigating Bible more than science.
27And God created man in His own image, in the image of God created He him; male and female created He them. (Gen 1:27)
Theological Respond: On the sixth day God Almighty raised man from soil to be the lord of all things which was created by God upon the earth and in water. Yet he created archangels and angels before he could create man, placing spiritual beings before earthly ones just as light was made before sky and the earth. This sixth day is known as parasceve, which means the preparation of the kingdom. God Almighty completed his works before he created the angles and made man in his own image and likeness so that they shouldn’t falsely assert that they had been his helpers.
And there was evening, and there was morning, one day (Gen 1:5)
Theology Respond: Hippolytus the early church father is very clear on this stand, explaining that the book of Genesis does not say “night and day,” but refers to “one day” referring to the name of the light.
This is why Bible is the only book through which the truth is judged and science is explained.
